CCZ MEDIATES IN COMPLAINTS VALUED AT MORE THAN $1 MILLION IN THE LAST HALF OF 2006
21st December 2006

CCZ continues to be the mediator between consumers and traders with the aim of solving disputes between parties amicably. The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) has handled more than 289 complaints in the six months from July to December 2006. The number of complaints filed in the last quarter is lower than that of the first quarter, reflecting a 33.1% decrease in the number of complaints filed in the first quarter of 2006. Despite the decline in the number of complaints, the value of the complaints remains above the $1 million mark. In the first quarter CCZ handled complaints worth more than $1 394 072.52 whilst in the last quarter CCZ handled complaints worth $1 980 814.50 reflecting a 42.09% increase in the value of complaints lodged.
Mashonaland regional office recorded the highest number of complaints followed by Bulawayo, Mutare, Gweru and Masvingo respectively.
Of the complaints resolved, 125 Walk-In Complaints valued at more than $1 980 814.50. CCZ has managed to recover $954 150.00 from the $1 980 814.50, reflecting a recovery rate of 48.2%. The figure could be higher as some of the cases are still pending. The complaints recovery systems in place at CCZ have guaranteed redress for many consumers and have also been highly effective in giving advice to consumers.
The highest number of complaints was rerecorded in the Contracts Category which is the category with items such as unfulfilled agreements, unfair contracts, lay-byes, selling contracts, and loans. In the last quarter the same category recorded the highest number in complaints. Consumers need to be wary of contracts and they are urged not to sign any documents they do not understand. Several consumers have lost their hard earned money due to entering into unfair contracts. Consumers are urged to be cautious and to critically assess contracts before committing themselves. They can alternatively seek advice from our offices or refer to other experts who can assist them.
Conditional selling remains an issue of great concern. Some unscrupulous business people have been selling certain commodities, usually those in short supply under conditions.
Consumers must check for faults and guarantee period especially when purchasing products like electricals and furniture. Some manufacturers and retailers have been selling substandard and shoddy goods taking advantage of the current economic conditions and the festive season. Consumers must report any such manufacturers or retailers.
CCZ will be happier if more consumers contacted our offices for complaints resolution. Consumers should not to suffer in silence, as we are there for them. An effective consumer is always proactive and does not compromise a fairdeal on the marketplace. It is the right of consumers to be heard and to get redress.
