CCZ Launches a 13 Week Radio Program
8th November 2009

CCZ launched a thirteen week programme with a local radio station (Sport FM) to conscientise and sensitise consumers about the existence of CCZ, its roles and functions and how it protects the rights of the consumers. The programme is also aimed at empowering the consumers to be pro-active and be able to firmly stand up for themselves as one powerful voice. The programme commenced on the 8th of October 2009 and is expected to end early next year with the assumption that consumers will be fully equipped with the fundamentals of who CCZ is and the rights and responsibilities of consumers.

Interviewed on behalf of CCZ was the Executive Director, Ms Rosemary Siyachitema who opened up with the brief history of CCZ which started in Rhodesia in the 1950s and was spearheaded by a group of white women who were concerned with prices and quality of goods and services. It later became “everyone’s” organisation after Independence and was registered under the Welfare Act in 1985. CCZ’s key competent areas include consumer education, consumer complaint handling, advocacy, networking and partnerships.

The topic under discussion during the introductory week was Consumer Rights and Responsibilities, whilst that of the second week was basically about Pricing and the Consumer Basket which companies use to determine the minimum wage of ordinary employees. Already the topics for week three and four have been determined and they will be Quality of Products and Consumer Complaints and World Consumer Rights Day 2010.

It is experienced that a new topic will be generated for every week until the end of thirteen weeks. There is fifteen minutes within the hour’s programme for phone-in questions from the public and some of the questions may be used as topics for future programmes.

Running currently with the radio programme, CCZ will host a similar television, half hour monthly programme beginning in November. In this way, CCZ expects to reach consumers who have televisions or radios.
